About The Cyclops |
The Portland based Cyclops Music Collective-formed in 2009- is a nine-member group of local musicians. This family like community of artists Encompasses the full spectrum of DJ’s, emcees, sound engineers, producers, poets/creative writers, instrumentalists, and overall positive thinkers. Cyclops members have spent several years performing locally, nationally, and internationally. Influences include: The Wu-Tang Clan, Curtis Blow, The Doors, Tupac Shakur, Organized Konfusion, Outkast, Bob Dylan, among many others. In the last decade members of the collective have released 24 albums separately and under various different titles, as of March 6th 2010 their debut album as a unified musical entity was made available worldwide. Making it a solid 25 independently released albums. Listeners at a live Cyclops event commonly remark upon the extraordinary chemistry that is naturally exuded through performance. “Its contagious!” is a frequently heard exclamation. The numerous assorted styles and ranges of vocalists escalate the energy and positive vibe, which begins with a boutique quality beat production. Like the cherry topping to any good thing is the instrumental attributes provided by live trumpet. The Cyclops Collective is capable of providing a multitude of creative entertainment. The Cyclops Music Collective has been described as a straightforward group of artists. Casey Jarman of Portland’s weekly newspaper Willamette Week states in his review of the recently released compilation album, “the compilation will probably be a lot of Portlanders’ thing: Those looking for introspective, thoughtful lyrics and low key beats; who feel isolated by the fronting, tough-guy image that even a lot of local artists embody. Cyclops doesn’t bother with the latter bullshit, and it’s nice to hear.” Although the Collective is new and fresh, as a whole, the members are no strangers to Portland venues, performing many times together in the past, they decided to unite and collectively work toward one goal: To preserve, maintain, and progress the quality, crucial elements, and culture of Hip-Hop music.
